This guide is for recreational learning only and does not promote real-money gambling. Every card in Sheepshead carries a fixed point value, and the suit does not change how many points a card is worth. The full 32-card deck adds up to exactly 120 points total, so the picking team needs at least 61 points to win a hand.

Here is the standard point breakdown:
- Ace (A): 11 points
- 10: 10 points
- King (K): 4 points
- Queen (Q): 3 points
- Jack (J): 2 points
- 9, 8, 7: 0 points

A common beginner mistake is mixing up card strength and point value. Queens and Jacks are the most powerful trump cards in Sheepshead, but they are not the highest-point cards. Aces and tens are the most valuable “money cards” and make up the largest share of the deck’s total points. Even if you win a trick with a strong Queen or Jack, you only collect the points from the other cards inside that trick.

It is also important to remember that winning more tricks does not guarantee you win the hand. You could take many tricks filled with 7s, 8s and 9s and still end up with too few points. Experienced players track Aces and tens carefully, because capturing these high-value cards is the fastest way to hit the 61-point target.

For quick reference: four Aces give 44 points, four tens give 40 points, four Kings give 16 points, four Queens give 12 points, and four Jacks give 8 points. All twelve 7, 8 and 9 cards contribute zero points. When you bury cards after picking the blind, those buried cards also count toward your team’s final point count.
